Arkansas is a place of great natural beauty and historic significance.

Little Rock

Little Rock, the capital and largest city in Arkansas, has got several points of interest.

  • The River Market District is the perfect place for a stroll.  The Ottenheimer Market Hall has food stalls, shops, and cafes, and if you walk to the end of Riverfront Park you can see the rock for which the city is named.

  • At the William J. Clinton Presidential Center you can see a full scale replica of the Oval Office and peruse a vast collection of document and photograph archives.

  • The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History in the old Little Rock Arsenal commemorates the birthplace of the war hero.

Other Attractions

  • The Fort Smith National Historic Site, at Fort Smith along the Arkansas River, protects the remains of two US military forts from the 1800s.  Exhibits focus on military history, westward expansion, outlaws and US Marshals, and the Trail of Tears removal of the Indians from their homeland.

  • The Buffalo National River, in the Ozark Mountains, is the home of the state’s only elk herd.  The upper section has whitewater rapids, caves, waterfalls, and interesting rock formations.  The park is a popular area for hiking, camping, canoeing, and fishing.

  • Hot Springs National Park is the smallest national park in the United States.  Part of it, in fact, lies within the city of Hot Springs.  For hundreds of years the spring water has been bathed in for therapeutic purposes, and there are facilities available so you can give it a try.  The water itself is heated rainwater but the heat source is not volcanic and so the water has a pleasant taste.  Bathhouse Row is a National Historic Landmark District of its own, with elaborate restorations of historic bathhouses.

These are some of the things to see and do in Arkansas, seniors; why not plan a visit?
